Abstract
Aquaculture and Sustainable Measures in the United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been increasingly investing in aquaculture as a means to enhance food security, reduce dependency on seafood imports, and support environmental conservation. Due to the country's arid climate, limited freshwater resources, and reliance on marine ecosystems, sustainable aquaculture practices are essential. The UAE has adopted innovative techniques such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), offshore cage farming, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) to optimize production while minimizing environmental impacts. Government initiatives, including the National Food Security Strategy 2051 and collaborations with research institutions, have further supported the sector’s growth. However, challenges such as water salinity management, feed sustainability, and climate change remain. The UAE sees aquaculture as a key part of its food security strategy, and the sector is expected to grow with more technological advancements and governmental support. This paper explores the development of aquaculture in the UAE, highlights sustainable measures, and discusses future strategies to ensure long-term viability and ecological balance in the region.
