Role of C-Reactive Protein In Severity among patients with Acute Pancreatitis: A Retrospective Analysis
Introduction: Acute pancreatitis is a relatively common entity and different scoring systems and parameters have been used to evaluate its severity. The role of c-reactive protein has also been studied in different disease in respect to disease severity and predicting outcomes.
Objectives: To determine the role of c-reactive protein in assessing severity among patients with acute pancreatitis.
Methods: It was a retrospective observational study of 44 patients conducted at Combined Military Hospital Peshawar from Jan 2021 to Jan 2022. All the data including demographics, laboratory and clinical parameters were recorded on a questionnaire and uploaded on MS Excel sheet. Data was analyzed on SPSS 25.0. P value less than 0.05 was taken significant. Patients with chronic pancreatitis, drug induced and missing data were excluded.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 48.48 ±17.5 years. among which majority were males (56.8%). The mean duration of hospital stay was 4 ±3.2 days. The mean CRP, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, absolute neutrophils, lymphocytes and amylase levels were 16.4 ±13.7, 11.0 ±5, 11.0 ±5, 1.6 ±0.8 and 1031 ±1189 respectively. High CRP levels were significantly associated with longer hospital stay (p=0.013).
