Abstract

Children’s Intellectual Development and The Impact of Cancer

This presentation explores the complex aspects of intellectual development in children, emphasizing the interplay between cognitive growth and other developmental domains: physical, social, and emotional. It also outlines the critical stages of brain growth from infancy to early childhood, highlighting the significance of neural connections (synapses) in determining learning capacity. Moreover, it also discusses the crucial window of opportunity for brain development during the first ten years of life, highlighting the significance of environmental stimulation and proper nourishment. It further examines historical contributions to intelligence measurement, particularly through the works of Alfred Binet and David Wechsler, and the evolution of terminology surrounding mental handicaps. Additionally, the PowerPoint delves into Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development, detailing the four stages children typically progress through as they learn which are Sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational. A key focus is also placed on the negative impact of cancer treatments on cognitive functions in children, including long-term cognitive impairments referred to as "chemobrain" and how to manage these problems. Overall, this research highlights the critical factors influencing intellectual development in children and the lasting implications of early experiences on their cognitive abilities.
