Ssembatya Joseph Mary is a dedicated and passionate Neurosurgery Resident from Uganda, currently working at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where he also serves as the Chief Neurosurgery Resident. He is committed to advancing the field of neurosurgery through research and clinical service. Ssembatya holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Busitema University and is pursuing membership and fellowship in Neurosurgery with the College of Surgeons of East, Central & Southern Africa (COSECSA).
With active involvement in several research projects, his work includes studies on intracranial tumors, CNS cryptococcoma, and arteriovenous malformations in low-resource settings. He has presented his research internationally, including at the IBRO World Congress of Neuroscience and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies Congress.
He is also a team member of the Duke Global Neurosurgery and Neurology research project and has contributed to studies on neurosurgical service delivery and outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. Ssembatya is a recipient of numerous awards, including the Lisa Hannehagan Humanitarian International Neuroscience and Nursing Scholarship for 2024, and is a member of several professional associations, such as the Neurosurgical Society of Uganda and COSECSA. Beyond his clinical and research expertise, Ssembatya holds leadership roles as the Education Director for Mission Brain in the African region and serves as an executive advisor for the Mission Brain Mbarara University Chapter. He is fluent in English and local dialects, and continues to contribute to the medical field through his work, dedication, and research efforts.
