Artificial Intelligence in Postmortem Analysis: Ethical, Legal, and Cybersecurity Implications
Abstract
In the evolving field of postmortem examination and death investigation, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies may open transformative pathways, offering unprecedented accuracy, efficiency, and insight. From digital autopsies and virtual reconstruction, we can have algorithmic prediction of cause of death. Hence AI is increasingly becoming a vital tool for forensic pathologists. However, alongside its advantages lie complex academic, ethical, legal, and cybersecurity challenges at national and international level that must be critically examined.
This presentation explores how AI is being utilized in postmortem investigations?such as image-guided virtual autopsies, automated injury pattern recognition, and toxicological data interpretation?while also addressing the potential risks of algorithmic bias, data manipulation, and breach of sensitive medicolegal information. The key areas to be addressed are: Ethical concerns: Consent in postmortem AI applications, respect for the deceased, and the moral boundaries of digital autopsy. Confidentiality is another issue in this regard. Legal challenges: Admissibility of AI-generated evidence in court, accountability for algorithmic errors, and the evolving jurisprudence around AI in forensic contexts. Cybersecurity threats: Protection of digital autopsy data, chain-of-custody integrity, and vulnerabilities in AI-driven forensic platforms.
The session aims to provide a multidisciplinary perspective for forensic experts, legal professionals, crime investigators and cybersecurity analysts on establishing robust frameworks that ensure responsible and secure deployment of AI in death investigations. With forensic evidence increasingly becoming digitized, the need for ethical and legally sound practices fortified by cybersecurity is more urgent than ever.
