Abstract
Planetary Health and Sustainability in Medicine: A Vital Addition to Medical Education
Planetary health, which investigates the interdependence of human and environmental health, is an important but frequently overlooked aspect of medical education. The growing impact of climate change, environmental degradation, and unsustainable healthcare practices has highlighted the critical importance of incorporating planetary health and sustainability into undergraduate medical curriculum. Future healthcare professionals must be prepared to deal with the health consequences of climate-related issues such as extreme weather, pollution, and the spread of infectious diseases. This keynote presentation discusses the importance of incorporating planetary health into medical education, emphasising the role of sustainable healthcare practices in reducing the medical sector's environmental footprint. By incorporating planetary health principles into the curriculum, medical students will gain a better understanding of the environmental determinants of health and be better prepared to advocate for sustainable, preventive, and patient-centred healthcare solutions. This presentation, which draws on global best practices, discusses novel approaches to incorporating sustainability into medical education. The session also discusses key challenges in curriculum implementation and offers practical solutions to encourage engagement among educators, institutions, and policymakers.
