Abstract
Integrating BIM, AR/VR, and IoT-Driven Digital Twins for Sustainable Urban Planning
The convergence of Building Information Modeling (BIM), Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), and the Internet of Things (IoT) is redefining how sustainable cities are designed, monitored, and managed. This presentation introduces an interactive digital twin framework that integrates both BIM model data and real-time IoT sensor inputs within immersive AR/VR environments. Beyond visualizing physical assets, BIM serves as a collaborative information hub, enabling architects, engineers, and policymakers to access, update, and analyze multidimensional data throughout a project?s lifecycle. By linking environmental parameters, such as energy performance, mobility flows, and air quality, to dynamic 3D BIM-based models, stakeholders can simulate and evaluate sustainability strategies in real time. The approach enhances participatory planning, predictive maintenance, and evidence-based decision-making while promoting interoperability across digital platforms. Case studies will demonstrate how BIM-integrated digital twins empower collaborative urban design, optimize resource use, and foster climate resilience. The talk concludes by discussing data governance, AI-assisted analytics, and the ethical implications of extended reality in smart city ecosystems.
