Abstract
Circular Economy 2.0 – A Regenerative Model for Biodiversity and Sustainability
The Accelerating Degradation of Global Ecosystems Demands Transformative Solutions that align Economic systems with planetary Boundaries. Circular Economy 2.0 extends beyond waste reduction to actively restore biodiversity, regenerate ecosystems, and create resilient economic models. The circularity can serve as a catalyst for ecological resilience, emphasizing the intersection of innovation, policy, and cross-sector collaboration. A key focus will be Singapore’s Zero Waste Masterplan, a forward-thinking strategy demonstrating how economies can decouple growth from environmental harm. The discussion will highlight groundbreaking initiatives such as plastic upcycling startups transforming marine debris into construction materials and urban farming models leveraging food waste for bioenergy and soil regeneration. It highlights industrial symbiosis, where businesses repurpose by-products as shared resources, fostering a closed-loop economy that minimizes waste while maximizing efficiency. In addition to technological and industrial advancements, it highlights the policy frameworks needed to scale circular solutions. Governments play a critical role in incentivizing green innovation, strengthening extended producer responsibility mechanisms, and integrating nature-based metrics into corporate and economic decision-making. By adopting regenerative design principles and leveraging technological advancements, Circular Economy 2.0 offers a pathway to eliminate pollution hotspots, safeguard biodiversity, and drive sustainable economic progress.
