Abstract
THINK GLOBAL, REPORT LOCAL: TAKING STUDENT JOURNALISM INTERNATIONAL
ABSTRACT
In countries around the world, environmental journalism has played a pivotal role in policy change. To create the next generation of journalists, college publications provide educational and practical experience for young reporters, editors, photographers and digital creators. Because ecosystems are connected and environmental problems do not respect jurisdictional boundaries, it is necessary for journalists to understand ecological and social issues that transcend the local. This presentation argues for the value of international experiences for student environmental journalists, including those exclusively concerned with reporting in their own communities. Drawing on existing research about in-person and virtual reporting exchanges, on workshops conducted in North Carolina, Tonga and Okinawa, and on experience from advising Western Washington University’s environmental magazine, this presentation offers recommendations for best practices. Recommendations include educational programs, curriculum development, student reporting exchanges, and network creation. Keywords: journalism, environment, international journalism, media, student
